What Surprise requires
Surprise's residential parking ordinance keeps trucks, RVs and utility trailers from sitting anywhere on the lot where they are closer to the front street than the house itself, unless specific conditions are met. In practice that means behind the front line of the home, which usually means the side yard behind a gate or the rear yard.
Surprise also has a large share of HOA communities, including age-restricted ones, and their rules on RVs are often stricter than the city's.
| Rule | What it says | What it means for the pad |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | No truck, RV or utility trailer parked in the front, side or rear yard so that any part of it is closer to the front street than any part of the residence, unless specific conditions are met | The pad sits behind the front line of the house |
| Screening and setbacks | RVs, boats and trailers stored subject to setback, screening and placement standards | Check fence height and setbacks for your lot |
| HOAs | Much of Surprise is in HOA communities with their own rules | Get HOA approval first |

Placing a pad in Surprise
The pad goes where the rule puts the vehicle: behind the front of the house, reached through an RV gate. Measure the gate and the side yard first, then size the pad to the rig and slope it away from the house.
For homes where the HOA does not allow RVs at all, the same side yard often gets a shed pad, a trailer pad for a smaller utility trailer, or side yard concrete instead.
